Special Transportation Evacuation Program
S.T.E.P
What is the Program?
S.T.E.P is a program designed to assist in the identification and evacuation of individuals with special needs during a
emergency situation.  This includes, but is not limited to, senior citizens, persons with physical limitations, homeless
persons, children and those without transportation.
Who Operates the Program?
The Rio Colorado Chapter or the American Red Cross, in cooperation with the Matagorda County Hospital District
and the Matagorda County Emergency Management Organization.
Who Can Use the Program?
Anyone that would need transportation during an emergency situation in which emergency management officials
request residents to evacuate their homes.
When Should I Register?
NOW is the time to register!  Natural, Hazardous Material, or Radiological disasters are possible in Matagorda
County.  Recent events in our country have also made acts of terrorism a reality.  Persons that register for STEP are
given information on Emergency Planning for your family, Evacuation Procedures, and preparations for terrorism
events.  Being Prepared is the key!
